>Sketch Every Day: 5.15.11

“K 2 Bay” – my sketch for today…inspired by the official logo/tee design for the 2011 Bay to Breakers run.
Even if you’re not a runner, participating in the world famous Bay to Breakers run in San Francisco is something you MUST try at least once. This year marked the 100th running of the historic race, first run in 1912 to boost the city’s morale after the devastating earthquake and fires of 1906.
Checking out the history of B2B, the day before at the Expo.

[From the B2B website]: “Since then, Bay to Breakers has prevailed as a testament to San Francisco’s uniqueness and audacity. Each year the race is a glorious celebration of the human spirit – a giant wave of athleticism, fun, frivolity, and determination flowing across the City from the Bay to the Pacific ocean. Bay to Breakers is one of the largest footraces in the world with 50,000 + participants and 100,000 + spectators annually. As the race grew in size it even set a Guinness Book record, with 110,000 participants in 1986. The course is challenging and beautiful, and consistently attracts world class competitors. But, it isn’t just a race for the serious runner.

The boys had fun at the Expo, getting all the free swag. They especially liked the Spiderman and Storm Trooper costumes from past B2B runs.

In the true spirit of San Francisco the race is a celebration for everyone. Thousands of costumed participants join with families, and weekend runners and walkers. As they make their way through the heart of San Francisco, energized by continuous bursts of live music, they are cheered on by thousands of spectators lining the route.

Throughout its long history Bay to Breakers has been a showcase for the City’s irrepressible color and its affection for eclectic traditions. Although runners come from across the country and around the globe, the race is still a quintessential San Francisco experience and a true reflection of life between the breakers and the Bay.”

What they mean by this is that B2B is an extraordinarily fun run, a 7.46  mile (12k) all-out party, well-known for crazy costumes (or some people running in nothing at all); and full of unique traditions such as the “Torilla Toss”, “Salmon Run”, “Bandits”, “Centipedes” and “Footstock”.

After running the San Francisco Marathon in July 2010, my husband and I were looking for our next run and knew we had to be a part of B2B. So as soon as registration opened, we signed up! Aaron decided to wear the Twisted Sister (Dee Snider) costume he had hand-fabricated for my Rock Star party in November. I hadn’t really thought of a costume and by the time we were getting ready to head up, my work schedule got really crazy and I ended up deciding to go as his “groupie”….working with stuff I already had.

Getting ready to head out to the race (this is at 5:45 a.m.)…Twisted Sister and his groupie.
It’s a tad disturbing to see my husband like this, but he did an amazing job creating this costume!

At the starting corral:  I’m wearing a Keep A Breast “Boobies!” shirt and bracelet.
The run was a BLAST!  We had so much fun!!! We didn’t run this for time, but jogged at an easy pace to really take in the party atmosphere and awesome experience. Aaron’s costume was a huge hit, attracting many photo-ops the entire morning. Most people knew who he was, yelling out “Dee” or singing lyrics to “I Wanna Rock” or “We’re Not Gonna Take It.” The youngsters who weren’t around in the 80’s, did not have a clue and thought he was supposed to be Lady Gaga…too funny! I’m so glad we were part of this historic event and hope to run it again!

Here are some of the photos we took with our iphones today….

Getting ready to cross the starting line…

Yay for the Bacon Girls!
That’s a lot of people…about 50,000 participants.
At 6’6″, my husband is easy to spot along the course.
Yep, that’s a naked dude.
Sorry for the blurry pic….here are some of the Salmon Runners…they run “upstream” from Breakers to Bay.
The finisher’s medal.
The crowds early on at “Footstock”…
Everyone wanted their photo with Dee Snider from Twisted Sister.

    >Oh my goodness, Marianne…I'm obsessed with bacon, I totally need to be a part of the Royal Bacon Society! Thanks for checking out my blog and making a comment. I LOVED the bacon costumes. I didn't take too many pictures that day while running, but I had to capture the bacon! Bacon lovers unite!
